For an ecommerce brand, using a 3PL usually means holding inventory in a warehouse, picking and packing each order, delivering it, collecting cash on delivery, and handling returns — so your day goes on selling rather than packing.
Where the name comes from
- 1PL — you, the seller, moving your own goods.
- 2PL — a carrier you hire for transport only: a courier, a trucking company.
- 3PL — a provider that runs several logistics steps for you: storage, fulfilment, delivery.
- 4PL — a manager that coordinates several 3PLs and carriers on your behalf, usually for large enterprises.
What a 3PL does for an ecommerce brand
- Receiving — your stock arrives and is counted in.
- Storage — kept in a warehouse, by SKU.
- Order sync — orders flow from your store or marketplace automatically.
- Pick and pack — items collected and packed to your instructions.
- Delivery — to your customer, often with cash on delivery.
- Returns — received, inspected and restocked.
- Reporting — what is in stock, what shipped, and what came back.
3PL, doing it yourself, or marketplace fulfilment
| Do it yourself | Marketplace fulfilment | 3PL | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Channels | Any | That marketplace only | Any: store, marketplaces, social |
| Your packaging | Yes | No, marketplace packaging | Yes, to your SOP |
| Your time | High | Low | Low |
| Cost visibility | Hidden in your time | Set by the marketplace | Itemised rates |
| Customer relationship | Yours | Shared with the marketplace | Yours |
Many brands combine them: a 3PL for their own store and social orders, and the same 3PL to prep and deliver stock into Amazon or Noon’s warehouses.
When a 3PL makes sense
- You spend evenings packing instead of selling.
- Stock no longer fits at home or in the office.
- You sell on more than one channel and stock is getting split.
- Cash-on-delivery money is hard to reconcile.
- You are about to hit a peak season such as Ramadan or White Friday.
When it may not, yet
- You ship a handful of orders a week and enjoy packing them.
- Your product needs handling no nearby 3PL can do well. Ask first, and expect a straight answer.
